Fauja Singh dies in hit and run

World famous marathon runner, Fauja Singh, has sadly died. Singh, who was out walking near his hometown in India was the victim of a hit-and-run road incident.

Singh, a British-Indian was widely considered to be the World's oldest marathon runner. Having taken up running in the year 2000, at the age of 89, he had an active running career until retiring in 2013.

As a member of London-based running club, Sikhs in the City, Singh was well known in the UK, running taking part in many British races. He also ran outside of the UK, including Hong Kong, and Canada where he was the first centenarian to complete a full marathon (unofficially).

Having stepped back from running, Singh returned to the Punjab, where he had a second home. It was there that he struck by an SUV. He lay unattended for several minutes until Balbir Singh, a family friend, passed by and noticed him. Doctors said he lost too much blood and could have survived if he'd reached them to sooner.

Nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado", Fauja Singh will be dearly missed by many. As Jas Athwal MP wrote on X, Singh "inspired millions across the world", adding "His spirit and legacy of resilience will run on forever."
