The Great North Run is the brainchild of former Olympic 10,000 metre bronze medallist and BBC Sports commentator Brendan Foster. With 54,000 paticipants, it is the most popular half marathon in the world today.

The race starts Newcastle upon Tyne and passes through Gateshead on the way to the finish line in South Shields.
