The ING New York Marathon is a very popular race. Rated alongside the best marathons such as London and Chicago, this is considered a must for most marathon runners. With 38,000 participants, 2 million cheering New Yorkers and excellent scenery the atmosphere is always electric and will be joy for anyone running.

New York Marathon Route
The New York Marathon passes through each of New York's five boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island.

Starting on Staten Island, runners cross the Verazono-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn. The next twelve miles passes through several Brooklyn neighbourhoods. These include Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint before reaching the half-way point at Pulaski Bridge. The race then enters Queens. After a further two and a half miles runners leave Queens, passing over the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan. This is the most ominous point of the race, with many runners tiring from the climb up the bridge.

Arriving in Manhattan runners reach the 16 mile point. Only 10 more to go. The race passes along First Avenue and briefly into the Bronx, before returning to Manhattan. After Harlem and Fifth Avenue runners reach Central Park. With only one mile to and thousands of cheering spectators the runners push on through the park. The race then briefly leaves Central Park before returning and finishing to cheering crowds outside Tavern on the Green.
