ING Miami Marathon

In 2003, not wanting to be the last city in America to organise a marathon, the city of Miami organised the ING Miami Marathon. Since then it has become more and more popular. In 2010 17,000 runners from over 40 countries turned out to participate. In 2011, 18,000 runners will be taking part.

The Miami Marathon is run on a paved spectator-friendly course.

The ING Miami Marathon starts at the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat basketball team. It then makes its way towards Miami Beach giving panoramic views of Biscayne Bay. After crossing the causeway, runners pass by star Island,home to stars like P Diddy before heading onto Ocean Drive. Passing Art Deco hotels and the Holocaust Memorial dedicated to the victims of the World War II tragedy.

Moving away from the beach, runners head to the lush chain of islands known as the Venetian Isles. They then make their way past Miami's cultural centrepiece, the Miami Center for Performing Arts before passing through the clubbing district. Here they will see Gesu Church, Miami's first Catholic church, located close to the half-way stage.

The race passes the Miami River and into the the shadow of skyscrapers. It then passes into the residential areas of Coral Gables and Coconut Grove. Much of the remainder of the race takes in these stylish neighbourhoods before the final stretch on Brickell which leads past the Miami Circle and a final crowd of spectators cheering finishers at Bayfront Park.
